To add fuel to the fire a killer is loose, raping and brutally beating young girls. Needless to say Maddie is a social pariah and is constantly being scowled at and having to dodge rocks being thrown her way. Generations later the very same tree is intact, and is a constant reminder of that day both to the Wisdoms and the townspeople. However, the tree wouldn't kill her and instead she danced for two hours and eventually they let her down. The rival's husband got a little peeved and the ancestor was condemned as a witch and was to be hanged. The story goes that Maddie's ancestor once cured the whole town of a plague, all except a town rival.
You see Maddie comes from a long line of witches, dating back to the end of the 1500s. In the small town of Mercy Crossing, the townspeople seem to have no mercy on the Wisdom family. In the wake of her father's death, Maddie, a young witch, has several problems ahead of her. Unfortunately it failed to capture my attention. I really wanted to like Something Wicked.
